The thing is, kinesiology isn't a major, it's its own college. The individual majors are Athletic Training, Movement Science, Physical Education, and Sport Management. They probably haven't declared a major yet (IIRC, Kinesiology is trying to up their standards by making people do a non-trivial application to major in Kinesiology before their Junior year). Sure, part of the reason athletes get put there is because it's easier to get them enrolled that way. But those programs seem like they're a pretty good match for the interests, abilities, and future aspirations of people that have probably dedicated most of their life to sports. I think it's a far better option than forcing them to get a liberal arts degree in something they're not passionate about. Though admittedly, there have been some issues in the past where athletes just assumed they were going to be doing liberal arts and were enrolled in Kinesiology, possibly because it was the only way to get them in.
