Room 402; Early Saturday Evening.

Mar 08, 2008 15:36

A.J. laid in the center of his room, where he'd usually be sitting, working on his project for class or maybe some new drawings or painting, but this time, he was definitely laying, flat on his back, limbs flayed out, and staring at the pinpoints of constellations he had painted on the ceiling. Occasionally, he'd remember to blink, but it wasn't ( Read more... )

Annette should probably just let him be, but she'd been concerned for him all day. That and she didn't feel like going home, like her mom wanted. So, here she was, knocking tentatively on his door.

A.J. was duly away of another knock on the door; unlike River, though, it appeared that whoever this was wasn't going to just come right in. "It's open," he muttered, although loudly enough that whoever it was would definitely be able to hear him.

Opening the door, Annette stepped in with a quiet, "Hey," because if he were resting, or looking as though he would much rather be alone, she'd just... well she'd just turn and go.

"Hey," A.J. responded, a bit hollow, because, just like when River came in, he didn't really bother paying much attention to who it was. The only thing he seemed to be wanting to put his attention into was staring at the ceiling and continuing to ignore Bob. His foot moved a little, rolling slightly to the side, but that was just about it.

Oh. Her heart just went out to him and although the bunny was cute, adorable, her attention wasn't focused on it. Annette moved in and sat down near him, near his feet. Wrapping her arms around her legs as she pulled them up, she rested her chin on her knees, staring down at him. "How are you doing?" Annette asked him, almost whispering.

"Oh," A.J.'s nose scrunched up a bit, with his expression, as if overly trying to seem dismissive, "y'know. Just. Freaking. Great." He sighed, heavily, a long stream of air, and considered, for a moment lifting his head enough to look down himself toward Annette, but realized that he didn't want to, and Bob probably would have gotten in the way, anyway.

"You?"

"I'm fine," she said and knew there just wasn't much she could do or say to make him feel at all better. He probably didn't want to either. Annette knew she wouldn't.

"I'm sorry, A.J., that you're hurting."

"Don't be," A.J. muttered, giving an incredibly weak attempt at a smile. "I'm fine. Really. Knew this was going to happen eventually..."

Just...not so soon.

Annette was not very good in these sorts of situations. Actually, she's never been in a situation where she's had to comfort someone from a break-up. It was hard. And it was harder because she cared for him.

"Is there anything I can do for you?"

Short of making it so that Beauty could come back?

"...Not really," he muttered.

But, a moment later, after another sigh and a shift of his eyes her way, A.J. added, "Unless you want to take this stupid rabbit back to Adah for me."

It would be something at least, that would make him feel a little better.

Annette glanced at the rabbit and though she had this feeling Adah didn't much care for her, she could do this for A.J.

Stupid rabbit just didn't sound great at all; there was a story behind it she was sure. She was also pretty sure A.J. wouldn't want to tell it.

"Sure... I can do that for you."

"Oh, thank God," A.J. seemed to melt a little bit into the floor. "She's got to be back from her clinic shift here soon, anyway, but I do not want to go anywhere near that room right now if I can help it, and River won't do it, either, and she was my only alternative."

Oh, that's right, Beauty and Adah were roommates. No wonder he didn't want to go back to that room. But Annette didn't understand why he had the rabbit to begin with. "Did she... just randomly ask you to bunnysit?"

A.J. was quiet for a moment. If Annette was paying attention, she might have noticed a certain coloration to his cheeks, but it was anyone's guess whether it was anger or embarrassment or a delicate balance of both.

"No," he answered finally. "She made me."

She was paying attention, she always paid attention, and the color in his cheeks was obvious but the reason behind it confused her.

His answer only doubled that confusion. "Okay," she said. "Can I ask why?"

There was a bit of shifting, mostly in A.J.'s legs and feet because Bob chewing away at his sweater on his chest prevented much more. "Because," he started lamely, in a way that made it almost seem like that was all he was going to say but, dropping his eyes away from the ceiling and over to the side, to the shadowy space under his bed, he actually continued, slowly. "I...uh...sawhernaked."

He wondered if the reason he could say it so much easier to River was because River had done that, too. He cleared his throat a little, quickly adding, 'I don't know. I honestly don't. The girl is just insane, that's the end of it, and thank God, I'll never have to ever deal with her again if I can help it."
