Technical note on Twitter / Facebook crossposting and pingbacks

Because LJ is a dolt again:

- Pingbacks means that if you have pingbacks turned on and user X has pingbacks turned on, once user X posts a public link to your entry, you get an automatic comment to this entry telling you they're done it. Nothing more. A poor man's Google Alert for your LJ's URL ( Read more... )

But it's automatically off, right? as in as long as I don't actively turn it on, it won't try and do anything? I really don't understand why LJ feels the need to connect with places like Facebook when it knows it's nothing like Facebook.

Pingbacks, alas, are automatically on. Crossposting is off, but you still get to see the greyed-out tickyboxes, which is an absolute bother if you do the Type-Tab-Enter workflow for commenting.
