Dracula: Entre l'amour et la mort

I first noticed Bruno Pelletier in Notre Dame de Paris, as recommended by fyrie, about two years ago. On Youtube, there were clips of him doing various things, including appearing in something that looked... strange. The music was great, the French lyrics had vivid imagery, but the costumes? The flames? I googled it and came up with Dracula: Entre l'Read more... )

Hmm. There tends to be something about French-language musicals that annoys me, and I detect parts of that something also here, and I generally prefer my vampire musicals with more Gothic rock style music. However, Bruno Pelletier is great, and I have to say I'm intrigued by these clips - there is something quite lovely about it that I haven't seen elsewhere, though I can't describe what it is. The music also sounds like something that can be just listened to more easily than most of my musicals - if I listen to Kunze musicals I tend to get very distracted from anything else. And I've been needing different kind of music to listen to. Also, I'm really happy to see a proper meeting/seduction song for Lucy and Dracula since somehow I've always felt more interested in their relationship than in the Dracula/Mina relationship (possibly because Lucy goes all the way from good girl to bad girl, rather than remaining halfway). So, in conclusion - I've had this CD sitting on my hard drive for some weeks, I think I'd better listen to it and see ( ... )

The music is hypnotic to some extent, and there are rock bits (Urgence, for example, which is the one with Mina and the random guitarist). The Lucy bits are indeed gorgeous - she even appears at the end as a ghost.

Yay for gorgeous Lucy bits! I'll have to listen to this CD at some point soon. And afterwards I can possibly help you with the French. After all my studying and living-in-French-speaking-countries experience I've turned out reasonably good at it. :P

I've had the CD for over a year now and I listen to it all the time, even though I don't know French. I had a similar "Huh?" reaction to the costumes at first, but got over it. It's great to know the DVD is out; the only scenes I've watched are clips on YouTube. I think I like Lucy's voice more than Mina's, and the song where Lucy & Dracula meet (I'm blanking on the title) is possibly my favorite. One of my other favorites is the song between Dracula & Renfeld just for the sound alone.

I made a friend of mine listen to this and Elisabeth last semester. She's a voice major, so I thought she'd be really entertained. (Me: I'm sorry I don't know what they're saying! But isn't the music pretty?) She made fun of the German-style singing, but I think she liked the music itself.

It's hard to follow the plot with my mediocre French, but the whole thing is so pretty. If you can get the DVD, I definitely recommend it just for the visual appeal.

Because of course we get into these musicals only for the music. It has nothing at all whatsoever to do with the eyecandy aesthetically-pleasing actors. (*shifty-eyed*)

Mind you, there are also great visual effects and brilliant acting. And tight leather.

I haven't watched the clips yet, but it sounds as though it might be just a tad too technology infatuated for my taste, but gorgeous. Your descriptions of the choreography in particular sound fascinating. (Have you heard Philip Feeney's Dracula ballet? I've only been able to find a few short clips from it, but I have the music, and it's wonderful.)

It's definitely modern - there's lots of social commentary on Dracula's and Mina's parts, with Dracula lamenting that in 500 years, nothing's changed - but it's an oneiric ballet of images that's fascinating to watch. If I have the time, which would be a rare thing, I might rip just the clip of the meeting of Vlad and Mina, just for how subtle that choreography is.

A little, but I think he's Bruno's friend, so that's why got the role despite looks-incompatibility ;) Especially with the beard he has on the DVD.

It's sooo pretty, too :D

Thanks for the review. I don't know much French so I don't own it.

I may end up trying to translate it, at least the big Dracula songs. It's such an interesting take on him.
