Okay, I'm over here fangirling you now. If there's something I possibly enjoy reading more than a great story, it's the author's rationale when they wrote it. And yours is fascinating. All the little details and random facts - I love such bits of backstory - and knowing that you don't like S&M and humiliation makes the fact that you wrote it all the more impressive. Joannes is, of course, wonderful and such a fascinating character, and, as I've commented many times, your Draculea is perfect. The way you write him, especially in this particular story, has actually been invaluble when writing the character myself, because though I write novel!Dracula, I combine his historical backround in my portrayal of the character, and he often ends up like this to some extent.

The scary thing is, Draculea maintains that this is by far not the strangest setting for a recruiting pitch of his. He thinks the time he convinced the king of Hungary to set him free and let him marry the king's cousin instead of torturing him, all in the torture chamber ( ... )

Thank you! I still have your Dracula stories on my backlog from my trips, alas. Just not enough hours in the day.

When reading all the writing on him that says that his Hungarian captivity couldn't have been too ardurous I always want to say that, no, it was at first, he's just good at convincing people.

Watch this space for an upcoming story called Bloodmarks - an unofficial prequel to Roses and the chronicle of Vlad's love affair with Death. There are two scenes set in Hungarian captivity, one when he's in prison and being starved out because no-one dares unlock the door and approach him, another once he's bargained himself his cozy post as Official Ambassador Frightener and is going out of his mind with boredom :) Those are years of his life that he abhors the most, even more than the Turkish captivity, because despite his best efforts he considers them wasted.

Hehe well you deserve it. I somehow only discovered most of your fics this weekend. But I plan to make up for lost time and devour them asap.

Yeah I like that the story is told from vK's perspective. I'd probably feel differently about him being treated so harshly if the story was from Draculea's pov - I'd worry about him. :o) This way I know he's ok.

Although I really like your Draculea. He's somebody who can be cruel and like it, yet also likes kids. Not just in a crafty villainous "mwuahaha now i'll win this kid's trust because he may be useful someday" way, but like... at times Herbert was actually plain old endearing to him. I think that's really cute.

Draculea's something of a permanent lodger for me even now ;) He's such a complicated person - not evil exactly, but utterly ruthless, except when his own code of honour is involved. And he's had kids while not having anything better to do but play with them, so strangely enough he's good with them!
