"The last several winners for leading actress in a musical - Alice Ripley (“Next to Normal”), Patti LuPone (“Gypsy”) and Christine Ebersole (“Grey Gardens”) - delivered tour de force performances. None of this year’s nominees quite fit that mold; the performer this season who comes closest is Douglas Hodge, in drag, playing the chanteuse Zaza and high-strung mother in “La Cage aux Folles.”"

Too bad that's actually true because I'm laughing.

Wow, this article puts things into a rather depressing perspective.

Ms. Madover, meanwhile, said she worried that the dearth of great female-centered work remains partly due to family responsibilities for women, who are reluctant to sacrifice nights and weekends to rehearsals or leave their children behind to produce or direct shows out of town or on the theater touring circuit.

By the way, welcome to the entertainment industry, where minorities and women have the short end of the stick.

Well this is...depressing. It's totally true though.

That said I thought Connie Ray was one of the best things about Next Fall (which I really really loved as a whole), her performance was brilliant.

Sort of ironic considering it's coming from someone who directed a male-dominated play with only two female roles - and both of those so stock-character it's not even funny.
