I honestly think of songs from shows like Hair or Rent or Spring Awakening as just another type of showtune at this point. And given how showtunes were popular singles in other generations, why shouldn't they be now?

Jukebox musicals I tend to see more as covers, though.

As I read the article I was wracking my brain for a legit "rock" example in Spring Awakening and couldn't come up with anything, probably because I was thinking of Rent and Hair or even American Idiot.

I still think it's a shame that these shows flourish when things like Gpysy, Ragtime, and Finian's Rainbow can't keep open.

I love most all musicals and I love when they mix it up and push showtunes into different genres. Rock, pop, hip hop, whatever, bring it on. Just make the music not suck and I don't give a shit!

I think Broadway is at its best when it can hold a little bit of everything. Variety is the spice of life, and whatnot.
