Oh. That was so gentle and lyrical and lovely... the perfect story to read first thing in the morning. :)

The water would wash away any mask Fraser has, except the cold on the tundra has already cracked it into a million pieces. Ray crept into the cracks like water. And like ice, he cracked them open.

That is an absolutely marvelous image, and just so exactly right. :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

I had a sticky on my screen saying "freeze-thaw weathering" to make sure that I remembered that image and got it in.

Yay for sticky notes - what did writers do without them?

Oh, and I just noticed - happy birthday! :)

You have to imagine an entire elementary school singing it with the bearded teacher stopping playing his guitar to thump on the side of it as the kids sing on. Thanks!

This is a gorgeously lyrical piece of prose -- very dreamlike, but very real. It gives me happy-heart for two freaks in love, in Canada. :-)

Thank you for being so generous on your birthday!

Thanks. And they are freaks in love, that's exactly it.

It's your birthday, and we get the present. How awesome is that? *g*

There are no turtles here, even though Fraser promised them to him as he pushed him from the plane.

Awww...no fair. Also, dolphin-boy. *snickers*

You got it all wrong! It's your birthday - we're supposed to post stories for you! Got it? Good. I'll give you a pass this time because this was such a lovely, layered and poetic bit of fiction. But next year, watch out! *shakes fist*

And I love you so, so much for the lovely way you worked with the fish/bird pairing, up to and including the way you used national symbles (maple leaves, beavers, otters, Canada geese) to underscore the fact that these two loveable freaks have to work very, very hard to carve out a place where they can live together. They're complete opposites and that dynamic is literally em-bodied here, along with the symbolism of the landscape. Very well done.

And happy birthday!

*is very scared* ;-)

I think it's fascinating to see the stuff I do on instinct taken to pieces and explained. And that's exactly what this story is about, difference and compromise and that it takes work to build yourself a sort of Canadian eden.
