i know from a member of the canadian navy there is an international naval task force being assembled which will arrive in the area around march 2009 to actively engage the pirates.

That will have to do. I'm sure we've got at least one carrier group in the Gulf, but they're probably busy keeping an eye on Iraq and Iran.

Traditionally, task forces composed of much smaller ships (like destroyers and the like) have been used to combat piracy. A little judiciously placed offshore artillery and a couple platoons of marines is plenty to deal with any shore bases, and the small arms used by pirates aren't even going to make a dent in the battle steel hull of a destroyer. I don't see any need to go overboard, but I do think they should be hunted down and killed like all pirates througout history traditionally have been.

It will be interesting to hear how this task force is deployed, especially which countries will allow us to set up camps and stage artillery.

I'm more of a shock & awe kind of guy; I like the idea of pirates seeing an entire carrier group descending upon them.

Or maybe I watch too many movies...
