For the second time in two days, I've had to pry the Win 7 security virus's tentacles off my computer. Both times around six in the morning, which is really just lovely. *is exhausted* (Hopefully, it just re-dl-ed, and didn't like...just spring back up from behind the veil after I though I'd removed it ( Read more... )

I'm a big fan of open-source programs that are updated often and don't fuck up your computer's inner workings. I use avast for antivirus, pc tools firewall and the very handy Firefox add-on called web of trust that keeps me away from pages with a bad security rating (ie, the ones that are notorious for infecting computers).

These are the programs that usually keep me from computer trouble. Spyware Doctor, Adaware and the McAffee, Norton suites don't usually help me much. Spybot Search & Destroy might be handy to deal with malware, but for that, I usually stick to the (equally free) Malware Bytes.

If you've zeroed in on a webpage that gives you trouble, the soundest thing would be to avoid that site. However, an updated firewall is the first step in blocking threats. The default windows protection just aren't up to par.

Wow, thanks! XD

I have a copy of Malware Bytes and what I believe is Spybot now on my jump drive, to come to my rescue should this happen again.

I dl-ed the Firefox add-on, and have been checking things with it, so thanks for the tip. :) My dad made me go out and buy Kaspersky internet protection, and so far it's been going okay.

(yah, girly, i've missed talking to you. :-/)

I would switch from IE to FIREFOX asap! Not only is it a better experience, Mozilla has constant security updates and their ad blocker add-on makes the internet enjoyable again.

IMHO browsing the internet with IE is just asking for trouble and lots of it.

I think I just got paranoid, because I updated to FF4 and suddenly I was having all these issues, so it made me wary. But back on now. :)

I'm FF 3.6.17 right now and having no problems. Isn't 4 still beta?

At the same time, i AM MacIntosh, so I'm probably not as susceptible to corruption as a PC might be.

miss you two!

really...really do.
