The BBC believes that out of the following 100 classics, most people will only have read an average of six. Bold the ones you've read, italicize those you've dabbled with (read a portion/watched a film rendition/read an abridged version). Taken from scandalmonger

That's why I honest don't like lists like this--they're so subjective, and as you point out, mainly English literature. Some of them make me blink at their inclusion--the Harry Potter books alongside Thomas Hardy? Bridget Jones, but no Atlas Shrugged? Always makes me wonder as to who exactly is ranking these as 'classics'.

And hey, seven is still better than average :)))

I must agree with you. I like Bridget Jones, but it's not a classic. Where's Balzac, Saramago, Maupassant, Racine, Homer, Virgil, Dante, where the poets? Please, I can see Dan Brown, but not Dante!!!

I love English Literature, I really do, but we have more literature around the world.

I read: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28, 31, 34, 35, 37, 41, 42, 43, 54, 58, 60, 62, 65, 67, 68, 70, 80, 81, 85, 89, 92, 97, 98 and 100.

Did BBC make this list? Because the majority is English Literature.

I feel like I should've read a lot more.
Same here. o/

I think so, but I'm not sure if they came up with it or appropriated from somewhere else.

Oh wells, at least it's not like we have any dearth of time. :) And hey, you've read a damn good amount already :))) More than me!

To tell you the true I don't have plans to read the books, in this list, that I haven't read before. I prefer the French Literature, the Russian Literature, the Classical Literature (Greek and Roman). I can't believe Balzac isn't there.

And, for now, I'm more interested in GTOP Literature. OMG, I'm a freak.

Aw. I was never a huge Faulker fan, but I'm surprised there's no Rand or Twain.

I unfortunately got into a bad habit of bare minamilism during my final years in college, since I was taking 19+ credits a semester, and I'm all grr at myself on occasion for blowing off a lot of reading, but hey. Work smart, not hard?

English majors ftw. :)

Shaking my head at The Kite Runner, The Lovely Bones, and Memoirs of a Geisha because...seriously?

But the presence of The Little Prince and Winnie the Pooh kind of make it up for me :)

High five for reading way more than six!
