Meanwhile, Jaeris and the vampire called 90’s Kid were patrolling the north side of the city, keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity or people. Or at least, that was what Jaeris was doing. 90’s Kid seemed more interested in babbling about weird retro stuff that he’d managed to get somewhere. Jaeris did his best to tune to boy out-he’d seen the 1990s and would prefer to forget them.

After an hour, 90’s Kid seemed to run out of things to say, leaving a peaceful silence, though after half-an-hour of that, Jaeris started to get bored. He had never liked scouting, especially when it was unlikely something would happen.

“Has this border patrol ever actually caught anything?” he asked grumpily.

“Yeah,” 90’s Kid answered. “Few weeks ago, this crazy scientist ghoul dude came by with this patchwork chick. And other people like you come by once in a while.”

“I see,” Jaeris said. He looked at 90’s Kid critically. “So you’re new, right?”

“Yep!” 90’s Kid answered cheerfully. “I’ve only been a vampire for like, a month.”

“Oh.” Jaeris was surprised. “So Spoony was your Sire?”

“Yeah,” 90’s Kid said. “But he only did cause I was dying. These other vampire dudes attacked…and I wasn’t strong enough…but he totally saved my life! And I was stoked, cause my boyfriend’s immortal, too, and I was scared of growing old and dying and leaving him alone, but now we’ll totally be together forever!”

Jaeris glanced sharply at 90’s Kid. “You’re not bothered by what you’ve become?”

90’s Kid shrugged. “It’s kind of weird sometimes,” he admitted. “I’m still getting used to the whole vampire thing. But I get to live forever and have adventures and stay with Harvey…so it evens out, I guess.”

“Yeah,” Jaeris said. “I guess it does.”

“What about you?” 90’s Kid asked. “I mean, if you wanna talk about it…I know some people are touchy…”

Jaeris waved his hand. “Some are, yeah. I’m not gonna bite your head off…but I’d rather not discuss it.”

“Okay,” 90’s Kid said. “But you’ve got that totally righteous babe now…that’s something, right?”

“Yeah,” Jaeris said, smiling slightly. “That’s something.” His face grew sad. “But it’s like you said…she’s going to grow up…get old…and I’ll be alone again.”

“You never know,” 90’s Kid said. “There’s always a chance…”

Jaeris shook his head. “I couldn’t do that,” he said.

“Well, then, you’ll just have to, like, make the best of the time you have.”

“You’re right,” Jaeris sighed. “I guess…I waited a century and a half to find her…I don’t want to wait any more.”

“You’ve got her now,” 90’s Kid said. “When I was…before I was turned, that was what Harvey always told me. Live for now and you’ll figure it out.”

Jaeris nodded and they continued their patrol in silence.

An hour before sunrise, the guard changed, the vassals of the court taking over for the vampires, who hurried back to the manor. Jaeris found Rachel, sweating and with a split lip but smiling.

“What happened?” Jaeris asked in alarm.

She grinned wider. “Gave Linkara a black eye,” she said cheerfully. “And I’ll pin him one of these days!”

Jaeris continued to look concerned and she laughed. “Don’t worry about me,” she told him. “We won’t really hurt each other. And tomorrow, we’re planning to work on magic so we won’t be hitting each other for a while.”

Just then, Snob showed up again. “Come on, you two,” he said. “We need to get home before sunrise.”

Linkara returned to the office, where Spoony was studying something on his phone. The Vampire Lord looked up and smirked as the door opened. “Girl’s got some punch, does she?” he asked softly.

“Little bit,” Linkara said. “Anything happen while we were working?”

“Interesting times at the Palace,” Spoony answered, flipping the phone around and showing Linkara a picture. “Recognize them?”

Linkara studied the picture. It showed a young man and woman, clearly in the middle of a dance. “That’s Benzaie,” he said. “But I don’t know who the girl is. And the white balance is a little off. Why?”

“The white balance is fine,” Spoony said. “The girl’s an angel.”

Linkara was confused. “But why would an angel be out with an incubus?” he asked. “They don’t tend to be friendly.”

“You’re telling me,” Spoony said. “Snob asked a few questions and was basically told to fuck off.”

“So what are we planning to do about it?” Linkara asked.

“I’m not sure there’s anything we can do,” Spoony sighed. “They’re out of my jurisdiction and they didn’t hurt anyone. But I need you to go check on Father Suede and then get ahold of Critic. There’s something deeper at work here.”

“Right now?” Linkara pouted. “I mean, they’re probably asleep…”

Spoony smirked. “Of course not right now,” he said, moving over to Linkara. “In the morning…” He wrapped his arms around Linkara’s waist. “Besides…” he continued, kissing Linkara. “You’re hurt. I need to kiss it and make it feel better.”

Linkara laughed softly. “Well, then,” he said. “Make it better.”
