Today was a good day... my alarm went off at 11:46 a.m. (yes on a Saturday :-P ) and I hopped out of bed and the festivities began. One thing I'll say is, before I went to England I had a debit card, pounds and travellers checks. My travellers checks ended up lasting the longest because they were more annoying to use. I wouldn't get much in the way of travellers checks. I know they're safer and whatnot, but you probably wouldn't use them that much. Especially when you have $50 traveller checks and you're only making 10-20 pound purchases at gift shops...I just didn't want to bother. One woman wanted my passport as proof too when I used one, and I didn't carry that around.
So yeah, more cash less travellers checks in my opinion. Even though cash isn't as safe.

As for the debit cards, damn. I didn't realize charges were that much. Mine actually didn't have charges at all, but I had a special card. I was only around 15 or 16 at the time, so I got a VisaBuxx card. It's a beginner card for young kids, so it was a debit system, but whenever I bought anything it e-mailed my parents and told them how much I spent and where. So maybe there were special rules for that.
I'm sure you'll be fine with the credit card, though. Just keep track of what you're spending. You'll have to deal with cash, no matter what. And maybe just look into travellers checks to see what'll work best for you.
Hope that helps!
