One of the reasons that I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer so much is because it can be viewed on so many levels - several of them unintended by the creators of the show, but no less valid for that. Authorial intent isn't everything.

Wow, the dance scene in the Bronze was well-done. Buffy deliberately hurts three people that she loves with just one thing. The levels of ouch in that scene are horrible foreshadowing for the levels of ouch in the season. First off, I never saw Buffy as a bitch in this episode. I remember the first time I watched it and I was still so furious at Faith for what she'd done. It was tantamount to rape. It's fascinating how very parental Angel is to Wesley and Cordy in Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2.
