Just Between Us: thoughts on slow-burning romances

Dec 08, 2012 14:11

One of the things that draws me to romances are two people that the audience sees sharing private confidences and vulnerability. They let down the walls and show their softer side.

includes spoilers for the most recent episodes of Vampire Diaries and Supernatural )

I don't watch VD but what a great point about SPN and Dean/Castiel. I totally agree. I'm going to be looking for it from now on too. I'd probably put even the jokes Dean makes about Castiel in this category, like it's throwing people off the track.

Yes. The way Dean acts around Castiel when people are around (especially Sam) and the way he acts when they're alone tends to be very different. It's pretty fascinating to me.

It fascinates me too. Dean deflects, deflects, deflects, but even the snippets of private conversations we've seen him have with Cas - woah. There's something deep there.

Mmm, yes. I mean, at the end of S6, when they're first talking about the idea of Cas having betrayed them and Bobby compares Cas to Superman gone bad and Dean tells Sam, "That makes you Lois Lane." That moment literally makes me laugh out loud because Dean is projecting so hard.

He's the one with the 'profound bond' with Cas; he's the one Cas is focused on with laser-like precision; he's the one who is always asked to make the call for Cas. If anyone is Lois Lane, it's Dean; and he and everyone else knows it (and he actually is a hell of a lot like Lois).

But everything Dean doesn't like about himself*, he always projects onto Sam (which is another fascinating thing about him). Dean is the one who is a nerd (the number of Trek references alone that he's made...), not Sam. Dean is the one who wore women's underwear and liked it, not Sam. Anything Dean accuses Sam of is something that we should wonder is maybe something that's true about Dean ( ... )

This is an excellent point. I've been very frustrated with TVD for that very reason, because we the audience members know that what the other characters think about Damon and Elena is wrong, but they don't because they haven't seen it.

They have to carve out a space to exist in together; this is how they fall in love, in the creation of that secret space that only the two of them have the key to open.

That's lovely.

Yeah. There's just so much about Damon and Elena together that the audience knows but that the other characters are completely unaware of.

That's lovely.

I don't watch Supernatural but I agree on Damon/Elena. I too love the fact their relationship is all yours and no one else can understand them and how Damon only shows his vulnerable side to her.

Yeah, I always find it compelling to see relationships like there, where the walls are let down.
