Does it matter* to you what the creators think?

One of the things that was so fun about Doctor/Rose was how into it the whole cast and crew were. It was a joyous tumble of "wow, they really love it as much as I do!" with hearts and flowers all over the place ( Read more... )

(See my icon? This is from essentially fanart drawn by the show's creator, auctioned off for charity. I cut part of it off, but there are nine hearts around them. NINE. :D )

I actually think what the actors think makes little to no difference, and it has EVERYTHING to do with the creators. If the creator is determined the couple will be together, they will be. If the creator is against your pairing, they won't be.

I think back to the days of Veronica Mars, where Veronica/Logan was the fans' preferred pairing. But the creator, Rob Thomas, hated them and preferred Veronica with "nice guy" Duncan. As a result, Veronica and Logan kept doing the most horrible, hateful things to each other (I also think Kristen Bell wasn't a fan of the pairing either).

But in the case of say, Stefan/Elena, I think Paul Wesley is SOL if Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson are hellbent on S/E. But maybe he'll get annoyed and leave. ;)

Oops, my question was the wrong one. I've edited it. I was more wondering if other people had the same kind of emotional reactions to that sort of thing. Sorry about that!

That's a cute icon.

But, yeah, it's definitely the people making the show who decide what will and won't be canon (though sometimes the actors do have more of a voice in it -- I mentioned RDJ and he's actually a part of why Pepper is in The Avengers, because of how much he ships T/P).

My track record with pairings I shipped becoming canon isn't that hot (going back to Mulder/Scully). So, I honestly would prefer that the ships I love don't become canon. It's never yet been done in a way that really, really did it for me, or that didn't end up breaking my heart (Buffy/Spike, Willow/Tara, Lafayette/Jesus).

(Wait, I correct that. There was a show that did it the way I wanted: Wonderfalls. But I think that's because the show got canceled...)

The way shows ship things is not the way we ship things, generally speaking. However, that said, I do like when the show creators like the pairing I like. I just don't want them to actually write it. And it can be actively upsetting and put me off a show if they ship something I really, really don't (Olivia/Peter on Fringe. Angel/Cordelia. CONNOR/Cordelia, ugh.)

Hee, yeah, some writers aren't good at writing romance. At least not the kind of emotionally-deep romance that I see in high-quality fanfic.

I have come to terms with Angel/Cordelia. Though, ugh, man. A lot of the way it was written in S3 still bugs me a lot. But, yeah, if the show super-ships a pairing and you dislike that pairing, it can be hard to watch. For me, I have my very unpopular fandom opinion of disliking John/Aeryn. Liked John. Liked Aeryn. Just preferred it when they weren't, you know, in the same room as each other. The show vehemently disagreed with me.

Oh, I am with you re: John/Aeryn! I tried several times to watch Farscape, but every time, the knowledge that they were going to end up together made me stop. Exactly how I feel about Peter/Olivia, too. Love them separately. DNW together.

You are my people!

Is Fringe also super-hardcore OTP, then? I watched about half of the first season but that was around the time when I moved and I stopped watching a lot of things after I moved (and I wasn't the biggest fan of Walter, though I hear he's gotten much character reveal/development since then that would probably make him more sympathetic).

I definitely like to know what is going on behind the scenes in terms of how the showrunner and actors feel about ships because in some ways that can better prepare me for if it's going a different direction than I want ( ... )

OTOH, Teen Wolf has changed how I see behind the scenes stuff, because they actually are so supportive and it seems like it could happen. And then I look at other shows with popular slash ships where behind the scenes the showrunner may tweet a pic that's cute of them together or the actors may joke about it - but there's a "no homo" vibe within the show itself. This makes me feel like the people behind the scenes are courting slash fans (because we tend to be pretty hard core fans), but really just using us. I'm not sure where the line is between honest subtext and where it becomes queerbaiting though, it's very nebulous.

Yeah, that can be a hard line to figure out sometimes. Much as I do like USA's bromance shows, they inevitably have their moments where it's very clear that they're queerbaiting. And that gets frustrating. I haven't seen any of that from Teen Wolf so far and I don't expect based on the way that I've seen Jeff reacting to fandom, but you never know.

Hey did you see that, I actually brought it back to your original ( ... )
