I think they wrote the secondary characters really well in S1 and assumed we'd all be on the Scott love train because he's the hero, which let poor Scott down when fans loved everyone else so much. They learned their lesson for S2 and wrote him much better - but then for the sake of "surprise" didn't give viewers the info that would have helped his character so much. As it was, all viewers saw was him seeming to sell Derek out and then just a brief glimpse of him and Deaton making the mountain ash pills - which left a lot of people assuming Deaton was the brain behind the plan. So the way they chose to go about the end of S2 did him a disservice as well. Sigh.
I actually really do like Scott and think he makes a good hero characters because he's all heart, but I don't think the writers have served the character well.
Yeah, it feels like they don't have as much invested in writing Scott's character as they do a lot of the others. I mean, we had an intimate look into Stiles's fears and his headspace at the beginning of the second-to-last episode of S2 (that scene kills me; the way it's shot, the acting, everything Stiles said -- but it's a scene that makes it feel like Stiles is the protagonist). I can't think of any moment with Scott like that, where we got in so deep into what's driving him as a character. I just get the impression that the writers don't find Scott as interesting as they find Stiles or Jackson or Derek or Lydia or Allison or even Chris Argent.
They like him, definitely (and so do I), but they don't seem to find his interior world all that interesting.
Honestly, this is going to sound horrible, but I think Jeff Davis has a bit of a crush or at least some sort of mind meld action with Dylan O'Brien and so in some ways he writes stuff that will make him shine. It may also be that Dylan is hands down the best actor and that's easy to write to but... He calls Dylan up to get feedback about certain Stiles scenes, etc. Dylan comes from a Youtube background to be sure, but he was also writing his own scripts and helping film them for Youtube since he was 14 - and I think he and Davis have "clicked" because they have similar ideas/ways of thinking about storytelling. Whereas everyone else has been acting forever and is primarily only interested in acting

I do think Jeff Davis/the other writers made a particular effort to make Scott more likable / let us into his head a bit more in the second season, at least. maybe they'll remember to keep that up.
I think part of the problem is Scott is supposed to be our Every Man Hero, kind of the way Harry Potter is? So he's supposed to be a little exceptional, but still have Real Life Problems Just Like Us - he's failing things! he has girlfriend troubles! - but he seems so weirdly flat a lot of the time.
Yeah, it doesn't bother me so much that Scott didn't tell Derek (I mean, it bothers the part of me that goes, "hey! Working together is good and that plan could have failed so many different ways), but keeping the audience out of the plan was a bad idea, both for the reasons that you mention (the ticking bomb that the audience doesn't get to know about) and for audience sympathy for Scott.
So he's supposed to be a little exceptional, but still have Real Life Problems Just Like Us - he's failing things! he has girlfriend troubles! - but he seems so weirdly flat a lot of the time.
I think where they go wrong with this is Scott's priorities. Yes, he can have failing grades and girlfriends issues and that should matter but when people are dying or might die, this should take priority over grade or romance troubles. And that was where Scott failed a lot in S1. He would prioritize lacrosse or Allison over keeping people safe. That's... not sympathetic behavior. They did a lot better on that count this season, for the most part, but then

I get Scott's distrust of Derek, but GOOD GOD do the people on this show need to talk to one another. in general. Lydia comes to mind more than anyone else, but they didn't do Jackson a lot of favors either.
Yeah, S1 Scott's priorities were way more messed up than S2. He's definitely improved. the whole BUT WHAT ABOUT LACROSSE?!?!? thing was really starting to wear. Though I think I'm also really pissed that lacrosse seems to STILL be way more of a priority than school work? Since Scott is still failing like three/four of his classes. Scott, why you be making life so hard for you mom. Let's not repeat S1's parent-teacher night, okay.
