In my (unwritten) backstory, it's something that he and Lt. Colonel Sam decided on. 'Just in case', since they were trapped in the past for the foreseeable future, but they didn't want to take chances with the timeline. The ancient Epygtians did have various methods of birth control and Sam and Daniel are ten kinds of smart.
