I just finished (at this point a few hours ago (like 4 Monday afternoon) rereading The Perks of Being a Wallflower(after starting it around 3 Sunday afternoon). I don't think I had read it for a good year or so. It's just...truly beautiful and devastating. I always think of it as a book I can really relate to, despite one of the key themes of the ( Read more... )

Basil:

6. Do not read Stephen Chbosky--a very potent and talented author, but I have decided that his prose is spiritually corrosive.

By which I mean, extremely depressing and negative.

I mean, I only read it once, and liked it, but... that's the impression that I get.

My decision to refrain from My Chemical Romance lasted about two weeks. It was a thought, but at the same time their music isn't that much bleaker than The Smiths or Leonard Cohen, which isn't that much worse than a lot of the Replacements or Tom Waits, so where will it end? The fact is, if something means something to you, you can't just deny that it means something to you. It's not what's making you sad or anxious. It's just helping you through it through catharsis. That said, I haven't been listening to them as much as I had been.

As for Perks, I think you've got it wrong. It's true that the book is depressing, but it's about rising against whatever ailments you have and being more than that and not being on the fringe so much. The ending is really optimistic and hopeful about all that, despite all of the desperation and destructive behavior in the book.
