I had to do some errands for work today. I was looking for a battery operated light fixture under 12". Since I spent an entire semester working on a light fixture with GE, I feel I have a fair understanding of these types of lights. So I venture out in this nasty weather to discover...my concept for GE is on the shelves!!!! I'd link you all to my ( Read more... )

Did you make it using University money or funds? If not then it's not property of the University... We're running into problems getting funding for our Senior Design project, so we're switching to something we can fund ourselves, and then possibly profit from in the future...

Sounds really cool... hehe... wanna design me a stellar 'Jay needs his space' desk one day? I have ideas... =)

You're wrong on that (well at least at Auburn). Any design work, artwork, term paper, computer code, ect. is property of the University. Funds don't matter. You "pay" the school to teach you. So if you come up with some grandiose idea while you're there, it's theirs.
But on the money thing, GE actually provided me with money (not enough for the entire project).
One of most wise things I was told before I went into Industrial Design was, "if you come up with some great design, don't do it at Auburn. wait till you graduate." I didn't consider this fixture concept to be a life changing design, so that's why I continued to pursue it.
What's a space desk?

Yea, I dunno... My professor just talked about patentability and mentioned that if the University paid for it, it's theres, so if we didn't want that, come up with our own money... hehe... Our professor is a little flakey, so you're probably right...

What I meant by 'Jay needs his space' desk is... well... tough one... I meant that my desk is 'my space' ... It's where I go, it's where I spend most of my time; Some people retreat to a good book, or a special spot out int he wilderness... I retreat to my desk, and computer, and just chill/relax... Hehe... I've actually been thinking about getting a new desk, but I need certain places for things, stuff to kill all the clutter, and I was running ideas by my dad back in the day, but nothing ever came to fruition. I mean I like certain things about commercial desks and hate other things... I'm a big guy with giant computers, giant monitors and a comfy ass chair... I need something tailored to me and my computer habits/relaxation or what not... God I'm a geek.

i'm not sure of the technicalities, but since it was a GE sponsored project, GE may actually own the rights to your design. sarah ran into the same thing with the dr. marten's project.
