Google on Prop. 8

For anyone outside of California - or anyone inside California, come to that - who hasn't been paying attention, the California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in our state this summer. They actually said that it was unconstitutional to deny anyone the right to marry. And lo, was there much rejoicing!

And much gnashing of teeth. ( Read more... )

I am one of the people outside of your state that has helped fund the anti-Prop 8 orgnaizations, by particiapting in Live Long & Marry, the fandom fundraiser this summer.

I spent several hundred dollars on various fan treasures, and donated art that raised several more. over all the Live Journal initiative raised over $50,000!

Im glad you're voting!!

*HUG!* Thanks for that good news, Ven! (And thank you from all equality-minded Californians for your help!) I remember you sending me a link to the initiative, but unfortunately I had no money to buy anything and no time/ability to donate anything I thought someone would actually buy ( ... )

Define "right".
Here are your options:
A) human ability to do something, anything
B) personal desire to do something
C) legality of doing something
D) social acceptance of doing something
E) permission by human authority
F) permission by divine authority
G) command by divine authority

Hello, anonymous person, and welcome to my LJ.

In the matter at hand, the rights we are concerned with here are, by the options you list, C and E - a human authority granting legally defined rights (much like "freedom of speech" is a legally defined right). The California Supreme Court has granted same-sex couples the legal right to marry. Prop 8 looks to remove that legal right by altering the content of our state constitution, a drastic measure.

We could also argue that D figures in here somewhat, as there is a lot of "social acceptance" of equality.

Well said butmadnnw, venturous1, ophymirage, and loveslashangst, and far better said that I could have!

ButMad - your "further thoughts" is what terrifies me - not so much that a proposition exists that has the potential to lead to fundamental changes to our constitution (which is scary enough), but that people would vote for it. *shudders*

There - I think everything is fixed this time!

*blushes* My fingers had apparently stopped cooperating.

*points to icon* That's in reference to my inability to post correctly the first time. *grins*
