Tutorial #3: “Irish Coffee”

This tutorial was made in Photoshop 7.0, requires some knowledge of the program. It uses colour balance and selective colouring, so it is not translatable. Sorry PSP users!

Going from this image to this:

Difficulty: Easy

1)      Crop and prepare your base. In my case I used the blur tool on her cheeks and forehead (avoiding the nose, eyes and lips), used    the unsharp mask at 21% and then went over her eyes with the dodge tool, just to make them pop a little. Depending on your base, you may need to do more or less than I have.

This is my base:

2)      Add a new layer (SHIFT+CTRL+N) and fill with #FFFCCF (a creamy beige). Set to SOFT LIGHT at 50%. This should lighten up your base considerably. If your base is still pretty dark, play with the opacity or duplicate your base and set it to screen.

3)      Add a new adjustment layer- LEVELS. Under the tab that says RBG, put in the following numbers:

Input: 35, 1.00, 2.55 (leave the output alone)

Under the tab that says BLUE, put in the following numbers:

Input: 0. 1.00, 245 (leave the output alone)

4)      Add a new adjustment layer- SELECTIVE COLOURING. Put in the following numbers (if it’s not listed, leave it alone):

Reds

Cyan- (-55)

Magenta- (-20)

Yellow- (20)

Yellows

Cyan- (15)

Greens

Cyan- (100)

Yellow- (100)

Cyans

Cyan- (100)

Yellow- (100)

Blues

Cyan- (100)

Magentas

Magenta- (100)

Whites

Yellow- (-41)

Neutrals

Cyan- (25)

Black- (-12)

This step brings out the greens and blues in the picture, and also makes the shadows a little less harsh on her face.

5)      Add a new adjustment layer- COLOUR BALANCE. Put in the following numbers:

Midtones: +25, 0, -15

This warms up the image a little, and brings some of the tan colour back to her face and hair.

6)      Add a new adjustment layer- SELECTIVE COLOUR. Put in the following numbers:

Reds

Cyan- (-25)

Greens

Cyan- (100)

Yellow- (100)

Neutrals

Cyan- (10)

This is a very subtle difference, but the background pops a bit more and her face is a bit more defined.

7)      Now you can add anything you like to pretty up the icon- brushes, text, textures, etc.  Et Voila! You’re finished!
