Ipod classic issues - suggestions?

My Ipod classic is stuck in "recovery mode" and even after restoring it to the factory settings it still says its in recovery mode.  Is there anyway to fix this?  Anyone have any tips on how to fix it myself?  Or am I effed and just have to buy a new one?

I actually found that if I changed the drive that the Ipod was recognized under it began to work again. So when I moved it from (F:) to (E:) it stopped thinking the Ipod was in recovery.

I was really trying to avoid going to the Apple store because I didn't want them to just recommend me to buy another one.
