I feel like this is a really big step towards generating revenue for a city that has been severely affected by the problems on Wall Street.  Michael Bloomberg is a smart man who wants to make money for his city but also with a underlying motive of making NYC a greener city.  I love this man!

i like the idea of getting away from plastic bags, but charging the shoppers always seemed goofy to me. i mean...who started using plastic bags so heavily that they created a plastic bag addition in their customers? the supermarkets did. why not punish the supermarkets somehow as well.

my roommate (amy) attempts to be very "green" (she's washed by it!), so whenever they go to the market she has the reusable bags and whatnot. if i'm not mistaken, there is some sort of benefit to the shopper at the register.

i've never seen a store give a customer a benefit for using reuseable bags, but doesn't mean that some don't. i think its a good way to generate tax revenue for something we should avoid using anyway. i carry a cloth bag in my purse at all time so even if i go to the pharmacy they don't have to give me plastic. so i love your roommate she sounds great!
