The plastic bag thing is really weird. I've had stunned looks from shop assistants when I tell them that I don't want a bag to carry a loaf of bread. The bread is already in a bag with a bit at the top to use as a handle, so I really don't need another one. During the brief period when I worked in a shop on Princes Street two years ago I always made a point of asking people buying small things if they *needed* a bag, and when it's put like that, a lot of them would actually think about it and put things in the bags they already had.

It can get ludicrous here. There's a Co-op which is very good about plastic bags, and a sort-of-co-op which has great plastic bags that would hold your bike at a stretch, and they'd also be quite happy if you showed up with a linen bag. These guys, though, are exceptions. I'm waiting for the day that Albertson's gives me more plastic bags than items I've bought - they went 4 for 5 one day and have been trying very hard ever since.
