Fettisdagen or Shrove Tuesday

It's the obligatory yearly celebration of semla or fettisdagsbulle in Sweden today. And for once I've been a very good girl and not bought any before today. This year we felt lazy and instead of baking our own, I took an early walk to the local bakery and bought some for our lunch. I kind of miss eating home-baked semla with hot milk, since it's ( Read more... )

Oh, god. I just experienced a GIGANTIC wave of nostalgia.

(I'm a Serb living in the US; haven't had semla in about four years. Tragic!)

Do you traditionally eat them in Serbia as well? With almond paste or with jam like in Norway and Finland? I'd like to try the jam version one day, but you can't buy them here.

Well, in Serbia it's considered just a dessert (you know how it is in formerly socialist societies; we've only recently started to celebrate traditional Christmas again), so we have them at random times throughout the year.

I haven't seen any filled with jam, but the recipe we use is an adaptation of the original; I've only had them with almond paste twice, and both times they were home-made. The semla you can buy in shops are usually filled with vanilla-flavored cream and dusted with powdered sugar. Also, we call them something else... which I don't really know how to translate to English. "Princess cakes" or something.

You should bake some =) The whole house smells lovely and you can eat as many as you like. Hm, might be a good idea to invite some friends, so one doesn't end up like the Swedish king who died from eating 14 semlas..=)

mandelmassa is THE best thing ever. I was a bit miffed that yesterday's semlas didn't have enough in them.
