Next Chapter Chapter 1
It was an unusually cold spring morning in Seiteirei. A strong wind was blowing and swinging that had flowers yet to bloom, same time as it was looking for a victim, whose hair it could mess up.
The 10th Divisions captain’s office was bizarre quiet. Neither sound of Matsumoto dancing around a bit drunken nor sound of Hitsugaya yelling at her to do her job. The only sound that could be heard was quiet snoring. Matsumoto had passed out on the sofa, with her legs and her left hand hanging over the edge, left hand holding an almost empty bottle of sake. Hitsugaya was partly lying over his table, lying over a pile of papers. Matsumoto was supposed to be doing paperwork yesterday instead of drinking in her captains office. Her captain, who was due to Matsumoto’s incompetence forced to do her share of paperwork, and finally, when he had finished long after Matsumoto had passed out, he fell asleep over his table. If some outsider would have entered the room, they might have thought someone had attacked office the previous night, knocking the captain unconscious before fighting his lieutenant, and had afterwards thrown her on the sofa, placing a half-empty bottle of sake in her hand.
The first sound the young, white-haired captain heard on that particular morning was footsteps. Footsteps, a door sliding open and closing soon after. The footsteps came closer and closer, until they stopped in front of his desk. Hitsugaya tried to move his head, only to find that sleeping in very uncomfortable position had caused his back to ache. Perfect. The next thing he noticed was something rough, hard and flat under his cheek. The smell of papers and still partly fresh ink got into his nose. The paperwork he had been doing last night had been used as a pillow. “Great, nothing could be going any better.” he thought sarcastically. Only when he raised his head, did he see two slender hands holding porcelain cup containing green, steaming liquid. Green tea. “This clearly isn’t Matsumoto” young captain thought, only to see the answer as he raised his head. What he saw, was a girl with a pale face, brown eyes and short, black hair tied into a bun holding the previously mentioned cup. Hinamori. Lieutenant of the 5th Division, formerly serving under Aizen. Aizen. Hitsugaya didn’t even want to think of him, and turned his focus to Hinamori, who was handing the tea over to him, smiling.
“Good morning, Shiro-chan!” Hinamori said with a wide smile on her face. She was happy. Hitsugaya couldn’t even remember the last time he had seen her happy and smiling. Probably before Aizen’s betrayal. Then he felt a hand on his head. She was playing with his white hair. If he wasn’t this tired, he might even have said something to Hinamori. Not that it would have had any effect on her.
“Good *yawn* morning, Momo” replied Hitsugaya. He took the cup of green tea and tasted it carefully. Warm, but not hot. He had no idea how he had managed before, without Hinamori. Hinamori, who was now giggling. Hitsugaya raised his left eyebrow, wanting to know what was so funny to her this time. Like reading his mind (maybe she actually did) she opened her mouth to speak her mind:
“Your left cheek.” She said smiling gently.
Hitsugaya touched his left cheek, only to feel something wet and sticky. Ink. Ink from his paperwork. ‘Great! Absolutely perfect.’, he thought. But before he had time to do anything, Hinamori had already taken a handkerchief from the pocket of her black kimono. Hitsugaya tried to snatch the handkerchief from her hand, but his efforts were futile. She was already wiping the ink from Hitsugayas pale cheek. He sighed. He stood up, glancing at Matsumoto who was still sleeping on the sofa, atleast judging by her snoring. He walked around his table that was covered with papers, proceeding to stand next to Hinamori. Hitsugaya quickly glanced at Matsumoto, before kissing Hinamori on her forehead. As she felt his lips press against her forehead, she wrapped her arms around his waist, closing him into her embrace. The moment could have gone on forever, had Matsumoto not have woken up at that particular moment. As she stood up, she saw her captain and familiar looking girl having an intimate moment. She looked at them for a moment, before letting words out of her mouth, killing the moment:
“What are you doing in my office?”
That was enough to irritate Hitsugaya, his mood changing quickly from tender to annoyed. He did everything he could to hide his urge to take the first object in his immediate reach and knock Matsumoto unconscious.
“This is also my office, Matsumoto”, Hitsugaya said. Matsumoto really had the skill of appearing out of nowhere when it was uncalled for, but when he really needed her, she was nowhere to be found.
“… I thought the captains were having a meeting this morning. Was it canceled?” she questioned, yawning.
That was enough to freeze Hitsugaya. The meeting. The meeting he had forgotten. The meeting, he was supposed to be at. At this moment. He took a quick look at the clock hanging on his office wall. It was 11 O’clock. The meeting was beginning right at this moment while he was staring blankly at the clock.
“I’m sorry, Hinamori” he muttered as he broke away from her embrace. He quickly grapped Hyōrinmaru, leaning against his table, jumped out of a window, and disappeared. Flash step was really useful, especially when you are supposed to be somewhere else other than where you are. He tried to make it to the 1st Division’s barracks, before it was too late. He really wasn’t in the mood to listen to Hinamori’s captain’s suggestions on what was happening between him and Hinamori. His favourite seemed to be the question: “When can we admire the results of a certain sweaty activity?” which seemed to annoy Hitsugaya immensely. But because Hitsugaya didn’t want to hurt Hinamori’s feelings, he couldn’t do anything to him at all. And he knew that and made full use of it, while making sure not to cross the line and annoy him too much. Even a mouse will bite a cat when cornered. And usually, when that certain captain started it, others joined. Most of the time it was Ukitake, but there had been a range of people from Abarai to both of Kuchiki’s. It usually was Rukia joining the others, but had even seen Byakuya once. Byakuya, severe captain of 6th Division, had also once joined them. Hitsugaya could help but ponder what on earth had been going on.
While lapsing into memories, he almost passed the 1st Divisions barrack, where the meeting was supposed to be. When he was about to take a next leap, he noticed 1st Divisions symbol on the wall, and made quick turn towards the barracks door. As he landed in front of the door, he simultaneously pushed door open and rushed toward meeting room. Running through corridors and past doors, he noticed a clock hanging on the wall. Smaller hand pointing 11 while smaller pointed somewhere between 5 and 10, most likely 7. 11.07. He was quicker than expected, he still had a chance to not to be too late for meeting. Then the corridor ended, in front of him stood a door. Door leading to the meeting room. Hitsugaya took few deep breaths before stepping into the room. As he stepped in, he saw everyone staring at him. Ignoring this, he apologized for and walked quickly but calmly to his place.
“I have summoned all of you here due an urgent matter” said Captain-Commander Yamamoto with voice full of concern.
This wasn’t a good sign.
