I got yet another phone-spam message left on my answering machine today from Bob Chiarelli ( Read more... )

Under the current rules, no one in the country gets to say "don't call me" to politicians. Not a single one of us.

Until that's changed, we're stuck with the nuisance.

(Sorry, but that's the facts as I remember them from either CBC or michaelgeist.ca. I expect to be corrected fairly quickly if I'm wrong.)

I get to say "don't call me" to anyone I want. If they choose not to listen, I'll make the consequences as dire as I can.

They are not obligated to respect the "do-not-call" registry. I think that people who ignore it are making a poor marketing decision, and I am as unpleasant as I can be to those who do. (If it's an underpaid human sap who makes the call, rather than a robospammer, I still have no sympathy for that critter; there are honest jobs out there.) I don't believe that anyone gets to ignore a specific directive to them to stop calling me.

I just heard back from the CRTC: "If you have requested this political party to cease calling and have not respected that, they would be in violation of these rules."

I have just filed a complaint with the CRTC.

Hopefully not-Liberal also means not-CONservative, either federally or provincially.

Ick. No, absolutely not Conservative; they're vile/evil.

For provincial elections, my inclination is to vote either NDP or Green. Given the likely outcome in my riding, I'm often tempted to vote strategically, i.e. to vote Liberal to make sure that we don't get a Conservative MPP. But then the Liberal candidate does another phone-spam "town hall" "invitation", I complain to his office, they tell me that it's impossible for them to remove my number from the second call, and I go with my heart.

I know that my aversion to forced advertising is a rather petty reason to change my voting pattern, but I really do think that it's obnoxious... and despite my repeated complaints to them, they don't change it. I sent a note to the CRTC asking if they don't have to respect my request, directly to them, to stop calling me. I haven't heard back yet.

I didn't think you were some sort of neocon. :-)
