Alonso's New Home: My DIY bunny cage

Aug 10, 2011 12:59

So this summer my big project was building Alonso a new, bigger, better cage, as he had outgrown his original 2x2x2 storebought 100 dollar cage. It was much cheaper than anything I could have bought at that size. I'll break down how I did it as a helpful guide to anyone else who is looking at ways to build a cage.

Sweet! You did a great job!
I think you could house two bunnies in that just fine, especially if they get out-of-cage time.

Thanks! Alonso's a hyper one, so he gets lots of playtime, and once I'm back in my apartment I plan to bunny proof the living room so they bunnies can be almost free-range. Now that Alonso's litter trained I can trust him in a bigger area.

Thanks! I though so, but I just wanted a seal of approval from bunny owners more experienced than me.

Thanks! It was a lot of work, but it was worth it to see Alonso so happy to have more room to hop around.

Congrats on the accomplishment!

And yeah, once you've got the bunnies bonded and you can trust them alone together, and especially if there's daily out-of-cage time, that looks a fair size for two rabbits.

Thanks! It was a lot of work, but actually quite fun, and completely worth it.

Yeah, I figured it was big enough, but I just wanted to be absolutely sure, especially before I turned up at the bunny shelter only to have them tell me, 'Well, actually...' So, thanks for the reassurance.

There's going to be plenty of out-of-cage time, and I've got Alonso's old cage and some leftover panels to make a temporary makeshift cage/pen combo for the second bun until I can trust them alone together.
