Elaboration: I've tried to take to heart the best of everything my mom did, be weary of everything awful I've seen other people do (including my father), I read parenting books and articles, and I've taken classes and participated in support groups.
I consciously remember every day that my time with Moira will be too short no matter how long it is, and that she has been her own person deserving of respect and love from the moment she was born. And now matter how systematically my little raptor tests her fences, (hats off to Scott for the analogy) I try to stand firm where it matters, but I also try to pick my battles. Oh, and my goal in the long run is to lead by example -- i.e., I make her use manors, so I use them too.
And by the grace of God, it seems to be working, though I think all bets are off until she's 18. ;-)
