A valuable lesson

Yep, it was a great lesson on many levels. I'd been bitching about my laptop for months, about how slooooooow it was, how it wouldn't stream at all, how I kept getting javascript errors. I tried dumping the cache, even re-installed Windows. Nothing worked ( Read more... )

I had a similar adventure with an old P4 desktop - The computer would often get very hot and was sluggish for no apparent reason. One day I decided to solve the problem, and noticed there was this strange process running. Turns out Windows will actually throttle itself to prevent CPU burnout. I unscrewed the processor fan and there was a clump of crap on it.

Heat and sluggish problem solved...

Who knew, right? Someone suggested I check the BIOS to see if there's some kind of alarm I can activate so it sends me a message or beeps or something if the CPU is overheating. Next time I reboot, maybe I'll check that out. I'm impressed that Windows deals with the problem. Go, Bill!
