King Ferdinand II of Aragon, one of the worst royal father’s in history, passed away on 23 January 1516 and was (oddly enough) lamented by his surviving children.
Certainly does but remember that this was the 16th century where women had no rights and were used as pawns, especially rich women. Katherine of Aragon's sole purpose was to enhance relations between England and the Spanish empire. Henry VII pushed the marriage between Katherine and the heir apparent, Arthur, but once Arthur died and Ferdinand refused to send over Katherine's dowry to England, Katherine of Aragon essentially became useless to either men. After the death of Arthur and due to Katherine's lack of dowry and riches, Henry VII had no use for her and locked her away. While Henry VIII treated her horribly after he met Anne Boleyn, he got her out of that miserable experience by marrying her. At least she had about 25 happy years with Henry.
Total insanity in the medieval age! But we can't judge those times by 21st century standards. Kings held absolute power and executed people if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Women had no rights and were used as pawns for power. Ferdinand and Isabela instigated the Inquisition where they tortured non-Catholics. We have it pretty good nowadays.

Well, it all sounds pretty horrible doesn't it...keeping your kids locked up. Yikes.
