When doing quizzes or watching University Challenge or the like, I frequently think, "I don't know this one," just as some answer pops quietly into the back of my mind. "But I won't say that out loud," I think, "because I've no idea where it came from, and it's bound to be hilariously and embarrassingly wrong." Almost invariably, it turns out to be right. From this I have concluded that the brain is a very sneaky thing indeed, that takes delight in putting things into storage without informing us that it's doing so, and without providing a proper indexing system or recording its sources. It really needs to go on an information management course.

My subconscious isn't nearly so helpful - I usually have to resort to posting pictures of trees at ispotnature.org for the tree-boffins to identify.

I wish it would store things where I could find them! Although I suppose that would imply being able to find my keys from time to time...
