Pixel Peaks - Chapter Eleven
It's shorter than usual, but it's sort of important.
Not even the birds chirped, the forest lied silent around him. It was like it was holding it's breath.
Waiting for him to enter before unleashing it's power upon him.
He was closing in on the cracked walls when he caught the tree branches moving in the corner of his eye.
Greta: Hee-ya!
He had barely time to look up and catch something green coming crashing down.
She landed in front of him on light feet.
And then she charged.
He grabbed her arms, using his own fall to throw her away.
They fell to the ground a few metres apart.
She rolled around within the blink of an eye and were in attack position again, but she didn't go back.
She stood up.
Greta: I told you not to come back here. We don't want you here. The forest doesn't want you here.
Ludvig: You were supposed to make sure he didn't hurt anyone!
Greta: I said no such thing.
Ludvig: Two people are dead and another one is in the hospital because of him!
Greta: Funny isn't it, how you sims start caring about life when it concerns your own, while you slaughter the animals, the forests, without blinking.
Ludvig: Just show me where he is.
They entered the ruins of the old mansion through the cracks in the walls. The years had allowed the forest to do whatever it wanted with this place, and trees had started growing through the structure.
The wood was rottening beneath their feet, it didn't even creak when they stepped on it. It was just soft.
Nothing entirely human had lived here for quite a while.
The green creature stopped in front of a door.
Greta: In there.
He opened it.

Saga stopped outside the open door.
She took a few careful steps and looked inside. The armchair where Nathalie always sat was empty. She must have gone for food.
She braced herself and turned her head towards the bed. He was still there. Of course he was. Tubes, drops and everything.
She hadn't planned on going in.
But she sat down beside the bed and took a deep breath.
Saga: I haven't really been fair to you have I?
Saga: I don't know. Maybe I haven't been fair to myself. You have so much you know. You have a life, a daughter, a firm ground, a beautiful house. Sometimes I forget what the inside of my house looks like. Like it's not even mine.
Saga: You have all those things I used to think I would have, but then just forgot about. All I have is the town, and it's a fulltime relationship. I don't see how that would fit in with your life. I don't see why you'd want me there.
Saga: But I'm glad that you do. I guess I should have told you that before, huh?
She opened her eyes. The body turned it's head slowly.
Saga: D-derek?
He opened his eyes and looked at her.
Saga: Derek? Can you hear me? Derek?!
She jumped off the chair and ran towards the door.
Saga: Doctor! I need a doctor in here!

The room smelled of rot and smoke. If there still was a chimney in this place, it wasn't doing it's job.
The body on the mattress didn't smell much better either.
Ludvig: Time to wake up!
The body rolled gracelessly off the mattress.
A growling sound came from it's throat when it arose, but it didn't sound as terrifying in this shape.
Ludvig: Getting hard to separate the monster from the man is it?
The creature straightened himself out.
Laurens: Ludvig.. I'm sorry..
Ludvig: You were supposed to keep yourself locked up at night!
Laurens: I do.
Ludvig: Oh yeah? Then why do I have two people mysteriously dead by "animal attacks"?!
Laurens: The hell do I know.
Ludvig: You killed them, I saw you!
Laurens: I've been here! For six months, I've been here. Locking myself in a cage every night, sleeping on a dusty cold floor, waiting for you to find a cure!
Ludvig: Oh I'm sorry I haven't found your cure yet, I've been a little busy chasing around Pixel Peaks making sure you don't kill anyone else!
Laurens: I haven't! What would I do in Pixel Peaks anyway? That's miles from here.
Ludvig: I think we both know what.
Laurens: What?
Ludvig: You go there for her.
Laurens: Who, Nathalie? I don't even think about her anymore.
Ludvig: Maybe not in this form, but the more wild side of you sure does. I've had to get her away from you, twice. Now her dad's in the hospital.
Laurens:I'm sorry to hear that but, I don't know what to tell you brother. I've been here. This whole time.

Nathalie couldn't stay still. The doctor had told her to wait outside while he examined her father to see if he was actually awake. The waiting was unbearable.
If he would just let her in there, have her father look at her, she would know right away if he was there or not.
Finally Dr. Scott came out of the room.
Nathalie: Is he okay doctor? Is he awake?
Dr. Scott: He is responsive, everything seems normal and he can breathe on his own again. He reacted when I told him to blink but he is disorientated. I do think he will start communicating in a few days time though.
Dr. Scott: I'm confident you will have your dad back with you in no time. He's a fighter, that one.
Nathalie: Thank you Dr. Scott..

Two people. Dead.
No, it couldn't be him. He remembered locking himself inside the cage every night, and waking up there every morning with hunger turning his guts inside out. He didn't kill those people.
And he sure wasn't stalking Nathalie. He had some bigger problems to deal with, he wasn't pining over some woman.
The sun was setting over the trees outside. Night would soon be here once again.
He couldn't keep track of the days between full moons anymore, the days were all floating together.
He would just go into the cage every night, just to make sure.
Make sure he didn't hurt anyone.
