Summary - Chapters 1 to 9
SHINee had set off to a small unknown village in North-eastern Japan for a short vacation. It was secluded and bleak, but at least they were away from public scrutiny for a while. There, they could unwind and go back to their original selves.
Jinki and Jonghyun were strolling along the outskirts of the village when Jinki had led the other deep into the forest. They chanced upon an old traditional Japanese mansion. Pulled in by curiosity, they decided to step into it to explore further.
The mansion was empty, save for scraps of rubbish and abandoned furniture. A door suddenly slammed shut while the boys were looking around, and when they tried to leave the mansion, a female ghost was in the way. Spooked and terrified, they ran deeper into the mansion trying to avoid the ghost.
Jinki and Jonghyun had found old documents lying around the mansion, and they discovered that things weren’t what they seemed to be. Something terrible had happened to the past inhabitants of the mansion, and unfortunately, they found that in order to escape, they had to delve deeper and solve the mystery.
They also found the Camera Obscura - an ancient camera made with holy materials that are able to repel and get rid of ghosts. With the help of some old instructions and notes, they used it as a weapon against hostile ghosts who were bent on hurting them.
Jonghyun kept getting vivid dreams with a similar theme - a religious ritual where one killed another he cared a lot for. He had one the day they found out they were going to Japan, and he kept getting similar dreams. In those dreams, the other four SHINee members made regular appearances. The dreams got Jonghyun extremely anxious as he knew they have something to do with the mansion he and Jinki were in. He worried for the safety of Jinki, Taemin, Minho and Kibum. Eventually the scenes in the dreams started to play for him even when he was wide awake.
The two boys tried looking for answers by going from room to room, while depending on the existence of sacred rooms - rooms where hostile ghosts couldn’t get to them. They uncovered more truths about the mansion and the ritual, and unfortunately at the same time, started to lose themselves more. Jinki gets possessed by the unsettled spirits easily, and the visions Jonghyun kept getting only serve to terrify him more.
Jinki and Jonghyun bumped into ghosts with familiar faces - Taemin and Kibum. They got even more scared and confused, wondering what was going on. Kibum-ghost hinted them of upcoming danger, and told them to escape.
In one of the rooms, the two boys discovered Kibum-ghost’s old diary accompanied with yellowed photos. The ghost’s name was Ibuki, and he lived there more than a hundred years ago. The photos indicated that five close friends had lived in the same mansion 100 years ago. They bore an uncanny resemblance to the SHINee boys.
After more delving, they found out that: Jinki - Shinji, Jonghyun - Yoshikuni, Kibum - Ibuki, Taemin - Taiki and Minho - Minawa in a past life. The SHINee boys are reincarnations of the five close friends who had lived in the mansion.
Ibuki was a traveller. He chanced upon the mansion while travelling and had decided to stay after making four new friends there and had become accustomed to their way of life. However things started to go wrong. Shinji and Yoshikuni were chosen by the High Priest to perform a religious ritual where one’s life was sacrificed.
Ibuki and Minawa couldn’t let that happen to two carefree souls and had decided to take their place instead.
The two chosen people will have to undergo seclusion from everyone else before performing the ritual. This was to ensure that they were properly detached from any earthly possessions or human emotions. They must only be concerned about each other in order for the ritual to succeed.
The time came and Ibuki strangled Minawa to death. Unfortunately the ritual had failed. It was found that the two were still too attached to Taiki - Minawa’s sweet little brother. Those feelings caused the failure of the ritual. Another sacrifice has to be done soon in order to appease the evil spirits. Again, Shinji and Yoshikuni had been targeted.
Ibuki was depressed and Taiki lost his mind. Still, Ibuki was determined to help Shinji and Yoshikuni. He had asked a friend to help them escape. The two boys did, but then Ibuki was found out. He was caught and imprisoned in a room. A search for the two escapees ensued.
Shinji was caught while Yoshikuni had successfully escaped. Shinji was made to perform the ritual alone. It had failed definitely, sending the whole mansion into darkness.
Back in present time, Jinki and Jonghyun continued wandering about. They came upon a large hall that gave them a whirlwind of emotions. A horde of ghosts attacked and they both lost consciousness.
Jinki and Jonghyun had a look into their past - as Shinji and Yoshikuni respectively. When they came to, they found themselves in a room fitted with an altar. Jinki kept drifting in and out of consciousness, constantly finding himself being controlled by Shinji’s spirit. He was also constantly hit with overwhelming amounts of emotions by Shinji’s spirit and by the spirits of all the people who had died in the mansion. He realised that he had to put these spirits to rest, that the reason he and Jonghyun were there was to help them, and that they had to appease the evil spirits in order to do so. He told Jonghyun they had to perform the ritual. Jonghyun, on the other hand, wanted them to escape.
Jonghyun pondered over the recent happenings and realised that he cared for Jinki a lot. He decided to go along with Jinki. They fell asleep, and when Jonghyun woke up, Jinki was nowhere to be found.
