Birthday Present for Myself

So, I just got a bunch of paychecks from my summer job in the mail, and they totalled almost $1,000, and combined with some pretty decent paychecks from my campus job, I'm feeling rather affluent right now. So, I'm thinking about spending a large amount of money on myself around my birthday. Here are some possible options ( Read more... )

I thought about that, but figured I'll be in Portland over Winter Break and plenty of other times anyways. Going to NYC or England would not happen quite so often.

I went to France, Germany, and Switzerland about 5 years ago, but I haven't been to England. Of course, I think going to England probably isn't going to happen, including the fact that I'd need to get an expedited passport, spending 20 hours on a plane for just a few days there isn't very efficient, and I have a huge audition the next Wednesday. But it would still be awesome....

The trip to New York sounds really awesome. When would you be going there? And then (not to sound like a mom or anything) put the rest in savings or something. But New York City is amazing and seeing the Decemberists there would be pretty frickin' sweet.

The concert is on November 2nd. I could fly down Friday afternoon and back Sunday evening. And I probably should put some in savings, but I don't know if I will.

I'd have to agree with Julia. NYC would be awesome, and saving money is always good. As cool as England would be, getting a passport now (if you need one, anyway), would be difficult, and slightly impractical. Of course, another idea is to save the money for a more extended Europe trip (that you start planning now) that includes another concert (over winter break or something?) or to see A somewhere else.

If you're wanting to invest, Barrick Gold (not sure what it trades under), might be a good investment (although I'd recommend looking into it thoroughly for yourself). On November 12 they'll decide whether or not to go through with a huge mine up here; I have a friend working on the environmental assessment who think it's fairly likely that they will. If they do, the stock should go up quite a bit-- the mine will use new techniques to produce more gold (per year, not overall, I believe) than has ever been mined from one place before. Definitely look into it yourself if you're interested, but it could be a good way to go?

I'm not sure how I feel about investing in a mining company. I know they usually don't have very good environmental track records. Plus, isn't there some insider-trading issues with your connection to them? Anyways, I'll look into it anyways, or maybe tell my parents about it or something.

As awesome as it would be, I don't think England is going to happen. And I'm not sure if you'd actually like their music, but just for me, can you see A at the Desensitized Festival in Basington on Nov. 3? It's kind of a dream for me, and just having a friend be there would be awesome.

What is your favorite rhyme for Colin?

Also, I recommend the NYC trip...might as well take advantage of your proximity to it, right?

I have no idea what my favorite rhyme for Colin would be. I'm open to anything except gerunds ending in --in'.

I think the NYC trip is most likely going to happen.
