Okay, I added a bit of grunge to my Bond harpoon gun poster...what do you grunge experts think? Does it look "realistic" and not too regular or anything? (This is a scaled down pic btw cuz the real one is like pretty huge lol).
I'm thinking the problem is that it's too white overall. For that much grunge, the poster would be yellowed, dingy, maybe smoke stained. I'd tint it a little, at least off white, maybe some yellowed edges.
I'm going to parrot what others have said. You could maybe create a new layer of some slightly yellowish-greyish-brownish color and set that to Overlay or Multiply or maybe create an entire layer of grunge brushes layered on top of each other so that it almost fills the canvas and then set that to Overlay/Multiply.
