I have had the week from absolute hell...first of all I got colitis, and then because of the colitis I completely munted my back...again! But it probably serves me right for wallowing in misery and not getting up for 5 days straight

Sorry to hear about the colitis. That is agony, and I sympathise. I think the rating system depends very much on who is doing the rating, but me, I try to gauge how I would feel if my 12 year old kid was reading it and rate from that headspace. I think I err on the side of caution, because a 12 Y/o is probably not going to back off because of a rating, in fact remembering how mine were, they'd probably go for it just because it was rated NC-17 just to be cute.

Rating slash is mostly going to be unnecessary for the most part, because if you are squicked by M/M then you'll back off anyway. Rating should then be more like, 'vanilla', 'triggery for...' or 'extreme kink'. Just my opinion. YVMV

Like I said, I´m gonna stalk you back and this post caught my interest because ratings are hard to give away I think - especially if you´re from another country where ratings are handled differently and you don´t really know what "stands" behind a rating, if you know what I mean.

You know my fics, they´re pretty much "porn free" but whenever I write a sex scene (like, in real sex, not just hand or blowjob) I normally choose NC 17. If it´s just a bit of hand or blowjob I´d take R and if it´s nothing of the obove, just kissing or cuddling and all the schmoopy crap I love writing so much *lol*, I´d take PG13. Others would probably rate my fics R but better safe than sorry ;).

But I agree with you - I´ve read fics that were R and I´d have given them "adult" (and okay, very stupid question, but is there even a difference between adult and nc 17 and even more stupid question from a not english speaking person, wtf does nc actually stand for?) and then I´ve read adult and I´d have rated it as r ;)

To be honest I have no clue what the NC stands for! Lol! But I do think it is pretty much like saying it's for "adults only".

I was recently thinking of changing my ratings to Explicit/Adult - Teen and Up - General like on AO3. But people seem to prefer the whole PG - R - NC-17 system.

Over here we have a G - PG - M - R16/18 rating system which kind of makes sense, but I guess that's because I live it.

I've always thought you rate your fics quite well (and you know much I love your schmoopy adorable boys!). I just finished my first long fic and gave it an NC-17 overall rating even though it didn't have actual sex, because it did have a relatively graphic rimming scene with a bit of food kink stuff. I think that was the right rating for it.

I liked what Sue commented too - that she thinks about how she'd feel about her child reading a particular scene.

In conclusion: It's still so confusing! Lol!

Don´t know if you will read this before you get home (but I hope you do, somewhere in Van you´ll surely have wi-fi) but I give it a trip. Congratulations for finishing your first long fic. If you happen to have a pdf of it (once you´re home and I´m home) I´d love to get a copy, that would be great.

Our system is 0 - 6 - 12 - 16 - 18 - which makes sense to me, too (even though I have to admit, the things they rate 0 are sometimes sort of brutal for little kids, too ;)). In the end, everyone needs to decide it for themselves. Some counts for warnings, but here readers seem to be more picky I think.

Anyways, have a safe flight to Canada (or wherever you´re flying to) and I really hope we´ll see each other! Seat E37, just drop by and say hi :)
