Emotional impact of Joss's shows

Hi all,

Hope you're all up for some discussion!

So, I'm watching Angel at the moment. I'm on the middle of season 4 (Calvary, to be precise - or is that meant to be cavalry? No idea). Now, I wasn't a big fan of Angel on Buffy. In fact, I downright hated the guy (and Angelus? Lame!). So it took me a while to start watching the show. Funnily enough, I'm now hooked. I like Angel a little more (though he's still far from my favourite character), and I like the other characters a LOT more and have a whole new appreciation of the show. (I am so obsessed now. Literally. Dreams and everything.)

The thing about Angel that has me hooked is the emotional drama. I'm an angst junkie, I guess, who yearns for happy endings but is secretly happy when things don't work out sometimes. (But seriously, would it kill Joss to be happy every now and then?) Angel by far has been the show I have been emotionally invested in the most. I felt drained after pretty much every episode. I had dreams of me comforting Wes when everyone thought he was evil. Did I mention that I love Wes, even though I hated him in Buffy? (Well, you were meant to hate him in Buffy.) Pretty sure his story is the one that gets to me most, and Cordy's after that, I guess.

What I don't know is exactly why Angel is getting to me so much. Maybe it's just the inherent drama of it. Hmm. Maybe it's just me being strange and geeky and over dramatic.

Anyway, after this having turned into an incoherent rant, I wanted to see what everyone else though were the most emotionally draining scenes or storylines in the Jossverse. While Buffy has some wonderful angst, and, as my first Jossverse experience, will always hold extra special value, I don't find I get the same emotional drain from it. Firefly I love for so many reasons, but maybe not exactly for the angst. And Dollhouse for me is a bit more of a thriller than anything else, tense and interesting, but not that consuming.

So, discuss! Look forward to hearing if anyone has similar experiences - or completely opposite ones!
