I think Angel just came full circle. Darla was the embodiment of evil that brought out the best/worst in Angel. However, Angel has changed-- he has a soul, is a decent person now, and has different motivations. Sleeping with her, triggered something in him that told him "I am not that person anymore..." and made his reprioritize and rethink his position in life after hardening months earlier.

Basically: Was Bad, Was Good, Thought Maybe Bad Was More Effective, Realized That Bad Really Wasn't For Him. Darla just filled in the dots and the catylist for both the original "bad" and the revitalized "good."

Angel was going through a tough time. Sleeping with Darla was his hitting rock bottom. He was trying to lose his soul in her but instead had an epiphany and regained his sense of self.

Wolfram and Hart brought Darla back as human to torture Angel (and they hoped to have her help bring forth Angelus). Darla starts dying, Angel tries to save her, Drusilla turns her against her will, they wreck havoc, Angel locks them in a room full of W&H lawyers to feast. He confesses to Gunn, Wes, and Cordy and then fires them because he doesn't want to drag them down into the darkness he has sunk into, basically he thinks it's for their own good.

Angel isn't necessarily bad, he's just lost. And it took sleeping with Darla, a moment of pure hatred and despair, to regain himself.
