What do you mean by 'watch stuff online'. Do you mean Youtube? Or do you mean, you dl stuff and watch it with VLC?

Have you tried any other player, to see if the problem persists? Have you tried more than one file?

Do you use Mac or PC? I know nothing about Macs.

Okay, you *should* have Windows Media Player? It's the default that comes with Windows? I can't imagine why that won't work on at least *most* of your .avi files.

I use it for most everything, and then i use VLC for the stuff that WMP won't play.

Or, hrmmmmmm.....you could try dl'ing and using Winamp - it's a good player, free dl.....

Wish i had more to offer! I don't get why your VLC suddenly went hinkey - did you change any settings or lose some drivers or something? Are you sure the file you're trying is a good file? I'm going to assume you've also tried to play ones that worked before.....

My VLC player has always been a little buggy. It has been my "last resort" player for a while. I only use it if my other players have issues, mostly with .mkv files ( ... )

I ended up reinstalling wmp. I have no idea what happened but it seems to be fixed now so I'll leave it at that. I try not to meddle in the affairs of computers for they are fickle and quick to bitch slap me.

I use The KMPlayer, which is awesome, let's you watch or listen ANY file, no codecs, can use subtitles, and lots and lots of funny and useful functions.
You should try it.

ETA: Sorry, I messed up wtih the link before :(
