I've also had problems with produce from Tops. If I have to buy large quantities of produce, I try to go the farmer's markets first, then to Wegmans if they don't have what I need. Tops is a last resort.

I've mostly avoided Wegmans, they are much more expensive then Tops, but I'm beginning to think they might have to be my last resort. I haven't looked too much into farmer's markets, I'll have to compare prices.

I agree that wegmans is often more expensive, but especially for produce you get what you pay for. I shop primarily at Wegmans now, mostly cuz I buy a lot of fruits and stuff, and it isn't cost effective for me to go to Tops for the few things I would buy AT tops. The exception there is that Tops carries honey roasted turkey (butterball) and I loves it so I usually stop in once a week to get lunch meat.

Farmers Markets are always your best bet, but we've got another couple weeks before we get locally grown berries and such.

personally, i've found that wegmans is actually cheaper than tops, but I guess it depends on what you purchase.

I agree with ghstalday, you get what you pay for. Wegmans customer service is outstanding.

How far are you from Lockport? Niagara County Produce on South Transit near Millersport Highway is, in my experience anyway, the best place to buy your fruits and veggies. Reasonably priced and I haven't had a quality issue yet since moving out here nearly two years ago.

West Seneca. every couple of weeks I pick up groceries at the walmart on transit, but their produce is about as bad as Tops.

I'm with you there. I don't shop for groceries there often, but yes, their produce is pretty crappy.

If you ever have the time/gas money, drive the extra few miles out to NCP. It's well worth it.

I'll second this, NCP has great prices on the stuff in season. Especially in apple season you can get a huge bushel of apples for practically nothing. Their deli prices can't be beat either.

You may want to stay away from their bulk section also.
I once bought trail mix for the kids I was student teaching & pour it into Dixie cups in the morning. When the kids came in they said "We already studied meal worms, why are we doing it again?"
Yeah, the whole bag was crawling. Never again...

EW EW EW. I'm sorry I have nothing else to contribute, but that is just so gross. Urngdsfkdssfl. I hate bugs/worms/anything really tiny that slithers or crawls.

Wow. I love gummy worms, but not that kind of gummy worms.

Walter would be rolling in his grave if he weren't so fictional.

Ah, Walter. I remember when my sister worked for Tops Corporate, she told me how Walter was just an acronym.

We
All

He's a lot less mysterious once you know the scam.

That's fascinating. I always thought Walter was just the first name of the guy in charge of produce at the corporate level or something.

I also remember Wegman's (at least I think it was Wegman's, maybe it was Jubilee) having a "Forget Walter, we've got Wally!" anti-Tops campaign several years ago.
