Can anyone recommend a Web site or book or other resource to learn about the local birds? There's so many beautiful calls I've never heard before now that it's spring... would love to hang out in the park and just track down which birds are making what calls

That might be step 2... I'm wondering if there's a resource on the Web with recordings of calls?

Yep... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/netcommunity/Page.aspx?pid=1189. It is the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's site (and they just redesigned it so it is more user-friendly).
