I was thinking of a more formal word... I was thinking it was 'rationalize' but my wife is convinced that isn't it.

But yes, cherry-picking is what I'm trying to describe.

nice, I googled 'cherry picking' and got the phrase 'inductive fallacy' I think that's it.
