A large part of the fun in this excercise is playing with the titles - when I can - to produce a story that while remaining true to the title, is something entirely unexpected.

The best responses I can get from a story are something like "Oh, I didn't think you'd do that" or "Didn't expect that..."

Though to be fair, playing against expectations is always fun, in writing or in life.

Alistair Cooke said that successful broadcasting on radio is the control of suspense... and I think there's an element of that in my writing, especially the fast fictions. Though, to be fair, alasdair once asked me if I'd ever written anything that didn't have a "twist in the tale" at the end. The honest answer - at least as far as fiction goes - is yes, but very, very, rarely...

Very interesting - you spin an intriguing scenario, and one that definitely makes me want to read on.

Can't wait for the next one!

Alan
