A friend of mine has been deeply involved in the independent panel report into the Hillsborough disaster. As it had little legal strength and had to rely on goodwill, a great deal of security was observed and my friend has just come out of a two year long, and exhausting, project that had to be kept super quiet from family and friends. And yet this story got bumped off the front pages and the lead items on the news by the never-ending Savile thing. To me, as awful as the allegations are regarding Savile, but this Hillsborough thing is huge, it's entire government systems colluding to systematically deny fuckups in which a lot of people died.

And there's no telling yet how high up in the Tory party the coverup went.

Tbh, this wasn't just the government; it was institutions closing ranks to protect their own (I almost don't blame them. Who wants the direct or emotional weight of that?) but drawing on a country-wide and class driven hatred of football fans to paint them as responsible for this was vile.

And Jimmy Saville deserves the front page. May his grotesquerie serve as a reminder that it's easy to say "Surely someone should have done something"

I still live in hope that there might be sufficient evidence that the families and survivors might be able to sue the Sun for damages.
