A Trek AU in which things are mostly the same except people have daemons ( which are, if you've never read the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, manifestations of a person's soul/personality in the form of an animal familiar, usually the opposite sex of the person, who is always with them and whom they can talk to. They're connected emotionally and physically, so if one of them gets hurt it hurts the other, etc, and they usually can't be more than a little ways apart without it hurting both of them

It's funny because I hated the first book so I never read the rest of them, but I love the daemon concept. So I kinda want to do this but then there's the whole thing with trying to figure out who would have what and then naming them. And then with the whole Federation of Planets things, would Terrans only have Terran animals? Would Spock have some hybrid of, like, a sehlat and a black bear? And then Jim was born in space.

I really didn't like the books but I love this prompt like(_______________________________________________) this much squared at least. Totally seconding it.

Jim’s never actually given thought to hurting Zeph. Like, the thought has literally never crossed his mind until this single moment in time.
See, Bones is asleep, which means that Galena is curled up at the foot of his bed, and Zeph has taken this opportunity to nose against Galena’s neck and fold a wing over her back. Both of the fuckers are in on it at this point - Galena’s even taken to sleeping with Zeph between the two beds in the dorm if both Bones and Jim are asleep.
Bones shifts in his sleep when Galena lazily half opens one eye before settling against Zeph, and starts honest to god purring. If Bones was awake there would have been some growling going on in Galena’s general direction

Gaila’s lounging with Anji curled around her neck, one of his unnaturally orange eyes half open like he’s keeping stock of what’s going on in the coffee house. Jim knows that he’s not actually one, but he always calls Anji an otter. If otters where land animals with silver fur and the aforementioned eyes. She’s also got Uhura with her, who looks up the minute Jim walks in and rolls her eyes, a move mirrored by Kafeel, who’s chilling by their table, legs folded up under him. He’s small for a gazelle, which Jim guesses is good, in the interest of serving on a starship. Nothing over 150 pounds or aquatic in Starfleet, at least not if you intend to serve on a ship.
“Jim, come join us,” Gaila calls, and Jim, not missing the glare he gets from Uhura and Kafeel, gingerly sits down next to Gaila, Zeph on his shoulder. “You look blue

“Easier said than done,” he mutters. Bones is crashed on the couch now, a holovid on in the background and a PADD in his hands. Galena’s reading what ever’s on the screen, her chin resting on Bones’ shoulder. Judging by their expressions, it’s either a page of adorable fluffy kittens or a letter from Jo and Honor. Jim’s willing to put good money on that second option

not OP, but someone filled the prompt!!! yes!! this was awesome. Looooooooove the fact that Bones' daemon is a lynx. Lynxes are oh so awesome animals. and i can just picture that annoyed, bored or amused look Bones would have on one! LOL

OMGOMGOMG!!!! WHY IS THERE NOT MORE OF THIS?!!?!? Seriously this is like... my perfect world! I gotta admit it took me a while to get through the books no matter how interesting and philosophical it sorta was but I came out of it wishing I had a daemon SO BADLY!!!! AND THIS!
And something I've always wondered about this world - what if someone had an elephant daemon? I mean, it would be so awkward (pun intended with the whole 'elephant in the room saying') like... you couldn't go out in society because you wouldn't be able to fit in like... a shopping centre or anything. Or what if someone had an aquatic daemon, would they have to carry around a fishbowl with them everywhere they went?
THIS WAS AN AWESOME PROMPT ANON AND A TOTALLY AWESOME FILL!!! MY LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE!!!

only skimmed 'HDM' but I took the idea of daemons and wanted one so bad... I even know mine would be a huge horse... *sigh* no Starfleet, seeing as how they weigh like a ton...
But that was like awesome.... and I really need my paid account so that I can make an icon of the daemons... that's how much I liked this... but you'll have to settle for the one I have.
