This was basically taken from the st_xi kink meme, with a few changes to fit Kirk/Bones, because I absolutely adore this prompt:

There are ingenious little devices simply called "timers" that are implanted onto a person's wrist just after the onset of puberty. Once activated they start counting down the days, hours, even seconds until that person meets their soulmate. They are 100% guaranteed to be accurate, even if the initial meeting is less than favorable.

The problem is that for Kirk, his timer is blank. Completely empty. This means that whoever his soulmate is, they do not have a timer.. But in this day and age, who doesn't have a timer implanted as soon as possible?

...

I figure Bones (with his semi-frequent bouts of technophobic attitudes) would be more than likely to avoid timers like the plague. So a fic with Jim searching for his soulmate, and eventually realizing that Bones, his best friend, IS his soulmate, would be amazing, y/y?

It had been this way since he'd turned 13, the timer completely blank no matter when or where he looked. At first he'd just thought that his mate just didn't have one yet, was younger than him or something. But by the time he was 18, he realized that something was seriously wrong, and that he could very well end up alone. That thought hurt, and hurt turned to anger turned to a slow-burning rage at the world ( ... )

He never once thought about checking Bones, especially because the man was his friend, and it was rude to do that to someone you liked.

Awr. This is so good, I can't wait for more!

Of course, after Narada, everything was already in a tail-spin, and his thoughts went to another angle: what if his mate was dead? So many people had died in the attack, and he had no idea if one of them could have been the one meant for him. Of course, Bones blew that theory out of the water, because even shit-faced on Saurian Brandy the man was a fucking genius when it came to matters of medicine ( ... )

This is interesting, I can't wait for more, even though I'm not the OP.

Things continued along that vein, though the fucking became a hell of a lot more limited when he was the Universe's Poster Child for the Fleet, and the Federation as a whole. He started paying attention to the beings he met, to the point that some of them thought he was empathic or telepathic, searching for intelligence instead of the other half of himself ( ... )

Of course, just having a psychic being tell you you're going to be okay and believing it were two totally different things, and even the smoothing of his pain couldn't dislodge it forever, the depression creeping up on him again, despite Bones' best efforts to cajole him into something resembling happy. He started looking at the crew in a new light, thinking back to his initial meetings with these people that had become his family ( ... )

a monster that you hopefully continue with. I loved the movie and adored how it all worked out. I really can't wait to find out how you work this one.

It only took three days of avoiding him for Bones to corner him, and for just a moment, it felt like old times. Of course, that was shattered as soon as Bones opened his mouth, and Jim tried to curl in on himself ( ... )
