Sweet Baseball Map

So below there is a sweet map I found at Strangemaps, a very interesting site for map nerds (Dave G., I'm looking your direction ^_^). But this map below probably would interest many people (but probably especially Dave and I). A few comments ( Read more... )

I just saw this yesterday on Uniwatch.

1) chris, remember this is not scientific :)

2) here is a map of the same idea, only based on 20,000 people voting. still not entirely accurate (biased by who has internet, likes baseball enough to vote, etc) but it seems to mirror some of the stuff in the one you posted. in fact, I wonder if that mural is based on this common census project. The shows a smaller tail on the Indians territory, but mirrors the large Marlins

I think you're right that reds territory should extend somewhat into Indiana, but I would bet that the northern part being CHicago fans is correct.

I agree Northern Indiana should be Cubs or Sox, although I had heard Northwest Indiana is pretty much the only White Sox territory outside the Southside of Chicago. That big portion of Illinois going to the Sox is likely Cubs territory.

I know it isn't scientific, but the Reds have a little tail based on a farm team, I didn't know if there was some logic such as that for the Indians stretching into West Virginia.

I would probably agree with you that the Indians tail is unfounded. I don't think there are any farm teams down there. The big ones are in Buffalo, Akron, and Kingston NC. I'd be willing to bet those areas are probably Pirates or Reds fans. although, there's a brewers affiliate in Charleston, WV.

They say the Mets fans are Queens and Staten Island, while Yankees fans are the Bronx and Brooklyn.

Also, the Angels do dominate in the OC. So they do have some territory of their own, even if they claim to be the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim but really in Los Angeles.
