sounds carried on the ocean breeze

Jul 09, 2011 20:31

just arrived home in boston for a few days.

the vivid blue of the flowers out front, the distinctive smell of the house, the dog's unbridled friendliness, thoughts of canoeing on the lake out back...

not to mention free food and good company.

it was the house's smell that really drove the point home, though, that actually stopped me in my tracks

travel, dulce de leche

Oh, to smell the ocean again, it's been a while. Last time was when visiting NYC, we took a water taxi from an awesome pizza place in Brooklyn back to Manhatten.

note: not anywhere near the ocean at present

i'm not really one for beaches, but the smell of brine in the air while browsing or eating (especially eating) at water-front shops has always done it for me.

Wasn't sure how far you were from the ocean, other than within breeze-distance. I haven't actually been to a beach in years. Right now I'm probably less interested in actual beaches, more inclined to scramble around rock formations, exploring, as the waves pound in below.

There are some smells from home that just get me -- my mom's signature dishes, favorites of mine from childhood, or flavorful smoke from my dad's grilling endeavors -- but mostly I just smell stale cigarettes when I go back now. :(
